Bacolod City is the largest and capital highly urbanized city of Negros Occidental Philippines. The province is famous for its festical called "MassKara Festival", held every October. Known for its happy, friendly and charming people, the city is given a nickname of "The City of Smiles."

History

The name Bacolod came from the word "bakolod" meaning "stonehill."

In 1894, Bacolod was made as the capital of the Negros province by order of Gov. Gen. Claveria through the Island's Governor, Manuel Valdevieso Morquecho. The 1st gobernadorcillo is Bernardino de los Santos and the first parish priest is Fray Julian Gonzaga.

On the 5th day of November 1898, the Negrense "Revolucionarios" captured the convento which lead to the surrendering of civil guards platoons. Couple of days later, the revolutionary armies gathered for the establishment of a Provisional Junta and the confirmation of the elections of Aniceto Lacson as president, Juan Araneta as "war-delegate" and the other officials.

On March 1899, the American forces occupied Bacolod.

On October 19, 1938Commonwealth Act No. 326 by the National Assembly made Bacolod as a chartered city.

In World War II - May 21, 1942, Japanese forces occupied the city. on May 29, 1945, the American forces liberated the city.
